Before You Invest
Conduct a thorough investigation of the benefits of alternative energy (wind/solar) generation before making an investment
The investments in alternative energy systems are not small. We want to be sure our members have fully evaluated the paybacks that may be realized from an installation.
Installation Requirements
- Your alternative energy system installation must meet all applicable National Electric Safety Codes and National Electric Codes
- Protection must be present that will automatically disconnect your system from the utility in the event of a power failure on the utility side of the meter
- There must be a manual disconnect switch installed near the electric meter that will allow our line personnel to disconnect your system from our distribution system
- That switch must be labeled to identify it’s function
- Your alternative energy system dealer should be able to assist you in meeting these requirements as part of the installation package
Application for Interconnection
An application for interconnection must be submitted to the REMC for approval prior to the installation of any equipment.
You will need to enter into an indemnity agreement with the REMC in which you agree to hold the REMC harmless for any liabilities that may arise as the result of your interconnection.
A certificate of insurance is required from your insurer, showing that you have the policy to cover you under such liabilities and naming Kankakee Valley REMC as an additional interested party or certification holder, prior to the interconnection of your system.

7 Steps for Installing Distributed Generation
Step 1
Member-consumer downloads and completes Interconnection Application. Returns the completed form and required documents to Kankakee Valley (KV) REMC for review. This review can take up to 30 days.
KV REMC requires with the submission of the Interconnection Agreement that the member- consumer show proof of a $1,000,000 Liability Insurance Policy.
KV REMC must be named as an additional insured, interested part and/or certification holder, per the Interconnection Agreement.

Following approval of the Agreement, the Interconnection member-consumer can begin construction of the responsible to ensure member-consumer is generation asset. The all required city and county electrical inspections have been completed
Member-consumer notifies city and county inspection complete and all required KV REMC construction is have been completed.

Within 20 days of being notified, KV REMC will schedule a site visit to perform a Commissioning Test of the asset. The must be open and left interconnection switch out-of-service until successful completion of commissioning testing. Any required fees must be paid prior to the scheduling of the commissioning test.
Upon successful completion of the commissioning testing, account will be setup on the member-consumers the Net Billing Rate.

What is Co-op Solar?
Co-Op Solar is a solar energy program from Kankakee Valley REMC. Unlike individual rooftop solar systems, Co-Op Solar is a “community solar” system. It allows many co-op members to get the benefits of solar energy.
Solar Blocks
When you participate in Co-Op Solar, you purchase blocks of solar power. Each block you buy gives you access to solar energy.
The charge for the number of blocks you agree to purchase will be billed on your monthly electric bill. Members can purchase Co-Op Solar blocks at the current rate of 20 cents each per month, per block, for up to one half of your average annual electricity use.
