Kankakee Valley REMC Commits For The Second Year As Corporate Spelling Bee Sponsor

Reading through this months newsletter should give you a glimpse of the committment that Kankakee Valley REMC has for the education and sucess of our youth throughout the community. Through scholarships and trip opportunities, we hope to provide to the youth of tomorrow experiences to help them use their talents and follow their dreams.

Our committment to youth and youth programs continues through our corporate sponsorship of the Scripps National Spelling Bee in LaPorte, Lake and Porter counties. This is our second year to sponsor this event for area schools enrolled in the Scripps National Spelling Bee program.

Scripps is the nation’s largest and longest running educational promotion, administered on a not-for-profit basis by E.W. Scripps Company. The purpose of the organization is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them in their lives. Participation in the spelling bee also gives students valuable expereience in developing poise, a necessary skill for success in public speaking, performing arts and athletics.

Kankakee Valley REMC’s role as a sponsor again this year will be to assist the local schools in establishing their school bee’s along with sponsoring the regional bee which will send one lucky student on an all expense paid trip to Washington D.C. where he/she will participate in the National Spelling Bee. First and second place finishers will also receive either the Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary or the Webster’s Third New International Dictionary donated by Merriam-Webster.

"Kankakee Valley REMC involvement in the spelling bee program last year was a rewarding experience. Students work very hard throughout the year in preparation for the chance to go to Washington D.C." stated Amanda Leek, Communications/Marketing Director for Kankakee Valley REMC. "It is very exciting to give a student a once in a lifetime opportunity to use their spelling talents to compete on a national level. We look forward to another amazing year!,"
